Built-up roofing, or BUR, is a tried-and-true roofing solution that has been protecting buildings in the U.S. for over a century. Often called “tar and gravel” or “asphalt and gravel” roofs, BUR systems are made by layering bitumen with reinforcing fabrics to create a durable, long-lasting membrane.

While newer single-ply roofing systems have become more popular due to their efficiency and sustainability, many built-up roofs are still in service today and continue to provide reliable protection.
